New Chapter Celebrations Conclude Largest Expansion Project to Date
We’re proud to announce the completion of our six-city, three-year, multi-million-dollar expansion project that enabled our program to increase our national reach and serve more students than ever before. We are tremendously grateful to the partners and stakeholders that fueled this project; in particular, the New York Life Foundation, which provided the $4MM seed grant. In 2014, we set off to open one school site each in ASAS Newark and ASAS Philadelphia; in 2015, we built upon our expansion by opening one school site each in ASAS Cleveland and ASAS Tampa; and in the 2016-2017 school year, we have opened in one school site in both ASAS Puget Sound and ASAS Bay Area.
Every day, students in these markets receive academic support and mentorship, participate in active play, organized sports and hone healthy lifestyle skills, learn about 21st century careers, business development, and master #STEM skills needed for these careers including coding, robotics, video game design, digital sound mixing, and try their hand at diverse enrichment activities, from spoken word poetry, to community service and leadership programs and hip hop dance.
We celebrated the opening of the final two chapters in Puget Sound and the Bay Area this month. At ASAS Puget Sound’s launch celebration, Mayor Suzette Cooke issued a proclamation declaring February 1 as “After-School All-Stars” day and attendees participated in a speed mentorship discussion with kids and voted for the best “Shark Tank” student business presentation. The ASAS Bay Area celebration the following day, student ambassadors impressed attendees, from demonstrating video game design and showcasing their laser cut product designs, to preparing healthy appetizers on-site.
Today, we serve a total of 2,085 students in 16 schools in these cities. We’re excited about what lays ahead in these, and all of our 19 chapter cities. We’re ready to help more kids succeed in school and life.
